Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Compression happens inside your browser using the Canvas API. Your photos never leave your device, which also makes the tool fast because nothing has to upload.
Why did a PNG barely get smaller?
PNG is a lossless format, so re-saving it as PNG cannot throw detail away. For big savings convert PNG photos to JPG or WebP, or reduce the maximum width. If a file would get bigger, the tool keeps your original instead.
What quality setting should I use?
For photos on websites and email, 70–85% is a good balance — most people cannot see a difference from the original. Use 90%+ for images that will be printed or edited again.
Does compression remove photo metadata?
Yes. Re-encoding through the browser drops EXIF data such as camera details and GPS location, which is usually a privacy bonus when sharing photos.
Is there a size limit?
Each image can be up to 50 MB and 50 megapixels. Very large batches are processed one after another so your browser stays responsive.

Lossy vs lossless compression
JPG and WebP use lossy compression: they discard fine detail to save space, controlled by the quality slider. PNG is lossless, so re-saving a PNG as PNG keeps every pixel and rarely saves much. For the biggest savings on photos, choose JPG or WebP as the output format.
Tips for the smallest files
- Resize before you compress — a 4000-pixel-wide photo shown at 1200 pixels wastes most of its bytes.
- Use WebP for websites: it is typically 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same quality.
- Keep screenshots and logos as PNG, or they may look blurry around text.
- Always keep your originals; compression cannot be undone.
Privacy bonus: metadata is removed
Photos from phones often contain EXIF metadata such as the camera model, date and GPS location. Compressed images created here do not include that metadata, which makes them safer to share publicly.
