    How it works

    1. Drop JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP or AVIF images onto the page.
    2. Choose AVIF to shrink images, or JPG, PNG or WebP to convert AVIF files back.

    4. Download each image or all of them as a ZIP.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is AVIF?

AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec. At the same visual quality, AVIF photos are often around half the size of JPG and noticeably smaller than WebP, and AVIF supports transparency too.

Which browsers and apps can open AVIF files?

Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari 16.4 or later all display AVIF, as do recent versions of Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. Some older editors and upload forms still reject it, which is when converting AVIF to JPG or PNG helps.

Why does converting to AVIF take longer than to JPG?

AVIF squeezes more out of each image, so encoding needs much more work than JPG. The encoder also downloads once (about 3.5 MB) the first time you convert, then large photos take a few seconds each, using every core of your processor.

What quality should I pick for AVIF?

AVIF quality numbers are not the same as JPG ones. Around 60–75% looks very close to a high-quality JPG at roughly half the size; 100% saves a lossless file, which is much larger.

Are my images uploaded to convert them?

No. Both the AVIF encoder and decoder run inside your browser with WebAssembly, so your photos never leave your device.

    Smaller images with AVIF

AVIF comes from the AV1 video codec and is the most efficient image format browsers can show today. A photo saved as AVIF is often around half the size of the same photo as JPG, with fewer blocky artefacts and smoother gradients. Smaller images make pages load faster and use less mobile data.

    Converting to AVIF

No browser can create AVIF files by itself, so this tool runs libavif, the reference AVIF encoder, inside your browser with WebAssembly. It downloads once (about 3.5 MB) when you convert your first image and uses every processor core your device offers. Transparency in PNG and WebP images is kept. A quality of 70% is a good starting point for photos; raise it for graphics with fine text.

Converting AVIF to JPG, PNG or WebP

Some apps, editors and upload forms still don't accept AVIF. Choose JPG for photos, PNG to keep transparency and every pixel, or WebP for a widely supported smaller format. If your browser can't open AVIF files itself, the tool's own decoder opens them instead.

    Using AVIF on a website

Every current browser supports AVIF, including Safari 16.4 and later. To serve older browsers too, offer AVIF with a JPG or WebP fallback in a picture element, so each visitor gets the best format their browser can show. All conversions here happen on your device; nothing is uploaded.
