Frequently asked questions

How are overnight shifts handled?

If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift ends the next day — 22:00 to 06:15 is 8 hours 15 minutes.

What are decimal hours?

Hours written as a decimal for timesheets and payroll: 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5 hours, and 8 hours 15 minutes is 8.25.

Can I calculate durations longer than 24 hours?

This tool measures up to 24 hours between two clock times. For longer spans, use the Date Difference Calculator.

Is the break deducted automatically?

Only the minutes you enter are deducted. Leave it at 0 if your break is paid.

Hours between two times

Calculate working hours for timesheets, shift lengths, how long a trip took, or the gap between two appointments — including shifts that run past midnight.

Decimal hours for payroll

Payroll systems usually need hours as a decimal. The calculator converts 7 hours 45 minutes to 7.75 so you can multiply by an hourly rate directly.
