Frequently asked questions
How do I write an amount in words on a cheque?
Indian cheques usually read "Rupees … Only", for example "Rupees One Lakh Twenty Five Thousand Only". Paise come after "and", as in "and Fifty Paise Only". Writing "Only" at the end stops anyone adding words after the amount.
What is the difference between lakh and million?
A lakh is 1,00,000 (one hundred thousand) and a crore is 1,00,00,000 (ten million). So 10 lakh is one million, and 100 crore is one billion. The digits are grouped differently too: 12,34,567 in India and 1,234,567 elsewhere.
How are numbers above 100 crore written?
The crore count is written in words like any other number: 1,000 crore is "one thousand crore" and 1,00,000 crore is "one lakh crore", the way budgets and news reports say it.
What happens to decimals?
With rupees or dollars, the first two decimals become paise or cents, rounded to the nearest one. As a plain number, each decimal digit is read out: 12.05 becomes "twelve point zero five".
Is "and" used inside the number?
No. The words follow the usual cheque style, "one hundred twenty five", and "and" only joins rupees to paise or dollars to cents, so nothing can be misread.
Indian and international place values
India groups digits in twos after the first thousand, so the same amount is written and spoken differently:
| Number | Indian system | International system |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | One thousand | One thousand |
| 1,00,000 / 100,000 | One lakh | One hundred thousand |
| 10,00,000 / 1,000,000 | Ten lakh | One million |
| 1,00,00,000 / 10,000,000 | One crore | Ten million |
| 1,00,00,00,000 / 1,000,000,000 | One hundred crore | One billion |
| 10,00,00,00,00,000 / 1,000,000,000,000 | One lakh crore | One trillion |
Writing the amount on a cheque
Write the words on the "Rupees" line starting at the far left, and end with "Only" so nothing can be added. Match the figure in the box exactly: ₹1,25,050.50 is Rupees One Lakh Twenty Five Thousand Fifty and Fifty Paise Only.
The converter works on the digits you type, without rounding them through a calculator, so even 30-digit numbers come out exactly.
