How it works

  1. Enter the marks you scored and the maximum marks.

  3. Read your overall percentage, with each subject's percentage in the table.

Frequently asked questions

How is the percentage of marks calculated?

Divide the marks you scored by the maximum marks and multiply by 100. 412 out of 500 is 412 ÷ 500 × 100 = 82.4%.

Should I average the subject percentages?

Only when every subject has the same maximum. If one paper is out of 50 and another out of 100, add up all the marks and all the maximums first, which is what this calculator does.

How do I write my subjects?

One per line, with the marks and maximum: "Maths 78/100", "Science 45 out of 50" or "English 80 100". A number on its own counts as out of 100, and the subject name is optional.

Does my board count every subject?

Not always. Some boards use the best five subjects or leave out additional subjects, so list only the subjects your board or the form tells you to include.

Total percentage versus average of subjects

When papers have different maximum marks, adding everything up gives a different answer from averaging each subject's percentage. Suppose you score 45 out of 50 in one paper (90%) and 60 out of 100 in another (60%):

  • Total method: (45 + 60) ÷ (50 + 100) × 100 = 70%
  • Average of percentages: (90 + 60) ÷ 2 = 75%

Boards and admission forms use the total method, which is what this calculator does. The subject table still shows each paper's own percentage, so you can see where marks were lost.

Before you fill a form

Some forms ask for the percentage of "best five" subjects, or exclude an additional subject, or want the figure rounded to two decimals. Enter only the subjects the form asks for, and copy the percentage exactly as shown.
