Frequently asked questions
How do I convert CGPA to percentage for CBSE?
Multiply the CGPA by 9.5. A CGPA of 8.5 is 8.5 × 9.5 = 80.75%. CBSE says the figure is indicative: it comes from the average marks of students in each grade band.
Which universities multiply CGPA by 10?
GNDU, IKGPTU (Punjab Technical University) for students passing out from April–May 2020, LPU, Anna University and KTU (2023 rule) use percentage = CGPA × 10, so 7.6 becomes 76%.
Why do AKTU and VTU subtract 0.75?
Their regulations use percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, which lines CGPA up with the marks behind it. A CGPA of 7.4 is (7.4 − 0.75) × 10 = 66.5%. For VTU this applies to the 2015–2018 schemes, so check your marks card.
What if my university is not listed?
Look at the back of your marksheet or your university's ordinance for the conversion rule, then pick the matching formula or enter the multiplier yourself. When in doubt, use the figure your university certifies.
Can I convert a percentage back to CGPA?
Yes. Switch the direction to Percentage → CGPA. The calculator reverses the same rule, so 76% under CGPA × 10 is a CGPA of 7.6.
Conversion rules used by this calculator
There is no single national formula: each board or university sets its own. These are the rules the calculator offers, all on a 10-point scale:
| Board or university | Percentage | CGPA 8.0 becomes |
|---|---|---|
| CBSE (class 10 and 12 grade results) | CGPA × 9.5 | 76% |
| GNDU, Amritsar | CGPA × 10 | 80% |
| IKGPTU (PTU), passed out from April–May 2020 | CGPA × 10 | 80% |
| IKGPTU (PTU), passed out before 2020 | CGPA × 9.5 | 76% |
| LPU, Phagwara | CGPA × 10 | 80% |
| Anna University | CGPA × 10 | 80% |
| KTU (2023 rule) | CGPA × 10 | 80% |
| AKTU | (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | 72.5% |
| VTU, 2015–2018 schemes | (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | 72.5% |
Rules change between schemes and batches. If your marksheet or university notice gives a different rule, that rule is the one to use: choose the matching formula or enter your own multiplier.
SGPA, CGPA and percentage
SGPA is the grade point average for one semester; CGPA averages every semester so far, weighted by credits. Forms that ask for a percentage usually want your CGPA converted with your university's official rule, not your raw marks.
