Frequently asked questions

How is running pace calculated?

Pace is time divided by distance. 50 minutes for 10 km is a pace of 5:00 per kilometre, or about 8:03 per mile.

How accurate are the race predictions?

They assume you hold the same pace for the whole distance. In reality most runners slow down over longer races, so treat marathon predictions from a short run as optimistic.

What's the difference between pace and speed?

Pace is minutes per unit of distance (5:00 /km); speed is distance per hour (12 km/h). Runners tend to use pace, cyclists speed.

How do I convert pace from km to miles?

Multiply pace per km by 1.609. The calculator shows both so you can follow training plans in either unit.

Know your pace

Pace helps runners train at the right intensity and plan races. Enter any recent run to see your pace in both kilometres and miles and what that pace would mean over classic race distances.

Planning a race

Use your goal finish time and race distance to find the pace you need, then practise it in training. Most runners run long races a little slower than shorter ones, so be realistic with marathon targets.
