Frequently asked questions
How do you add fractions with different denominators?
Cross-multiply to a common denominator: a/b + c/d = (a×d + c×b) ÷ (b×d), then simplify. For example, 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6.
How do you divide fractions?
Multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second: a/b ÷ c/d = (a×d) ÷ (b×c).
What is a mixed number?
A whole number plus a proper fraction, like 2 1/3 for 7/3. The calculator shows both forms.
Can I enter negative fractions?
Yes. Put a minus sign on the numerator, for example −3 over 4.
Fraction arithmetic made easy
Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions by hand means finding common denominators and simplifying. This calculator does the steps for you and shows the answer as a simplified fraction, a mixed number and a decimal.
Always simplified
Results are reduced to lowest terms using the greatest common divisor, so 4/8 becomes 1/2 and 10/4 becomes 5/2 or 2 1/2.
