Frequently asked questions

What is CAGR?

The compound annual growth rate is the steady yearly rate that would take the starting value to the ending value, smoothing out the ups and downs in between.

What is the CAGR formula?

CAGR = (ending value ÷ beginning value)^(1 ÷ years) − 1. Doubling in 5 years is a CAGR of about 14.87%.

How is CAGR different from average annual return?

A simple average of yearly returns can mislead when returns swing up and down. CAGR reflects what actually happened to the money.

Can I use CAGR for revenue or users?

Yes. CAGR works for any quantity that grows over time — revenue, website traffic, population or subscriber counts.

Compare growth fairly

CAGR turns uneven growth into one smooth yearly rate, making it easy to compare investments, businesses or metrics over different time periods.

Example

An investment that grows from 10,000 to 19,000 in 5 years has a CAGR of about 13.7% — even if some years were up 30% and others down 5%.
